THE LEARNING CENTER AT SPORTSMEN’S
STEC academic and enrichment programs have grown to become a core element of our programming. To better reflect this fact, in September, we changed our name to Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center. This year we have also brought all of our academic and enrichment offerings together under the umbrella of The Learning Center (TLC) at Sportsmen’s, which now includes comprehensive, year-around academic and enrichment programming for students in grades K-12 and young adults up to age 24 who have dropped out of school. The Learning Center at Sportsmen’s includes the following programs:
Elementary
- Royal Reader: a Saturday kindergarten program focusing on literacy.
- Ready Position: a comprehensive after-school academic program operating Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm with a focus on literacy and math.
- School To Sportsmen’s:a new partnership with two local elementary schools to provide intensive support to a cohort of 25 students. Students attend our academic after school program 5 days per week and also participate in tennis programs for 2 hours per week. STEC provides scholarships and transportation to the program.
- Summer Camp Academic Enrichment: includes structured reading time in addition to daily academic enrichment activities to address the skills dropoff that occurs if students are not actively engaged in literacy and math.
- Summer Learning Project (SLP): Piloted last summer with 35 students from the nearby Lee Elementary School, SLP is part of a citywide school/community partner initiatve designed to eliminate the academic slippage that occurs for many urban students in the summer by providing 6 weeks of academic enrichment programs delivered by a school/partner team.
Middle & High School
- Ad-In: tutoring and homework program for middle and high school students operates 3-6 pm 4 days per week and provides individualized support.
High School
- SAT Prep: course for high school students in partnership with Princeton Review. Participating students have increased their scores by as much as 200 points. We recently added a College Financial Aid Workshop to the program.
- GED Plus at Sportsmen’s: program for 18-24 year old high school drop outs conducted in partnership with GED Plus, a program of ESAC (Ecumenical Social Action Committee) that combines small group instruction, case management and tennis.
Multiple/All Grades
- City Growers (CG) at STEC: a new partnership with City Fresh Foods that established an urban farm on one quarter acre of open space on our four acre complex. CG gives our students a real-life environmental classroom, a first-hand view of the process of cultivating land and on-going dialogue around the impact of food choices on our lives and our economy.
- Technology: In February 2011 we launched our computer lab, which now enables students to conduct research, write and print papers and essays as well as create publications.
- HEY (High Energy Young) Sister: a free program, which allows girls ages 10-12 to explore important issues such as health and wellness, financial literacy, social activism, healthy relationships and college and career exploration.
- DEUCE (Don’t Ever Underestimate Consistent Effort) Boys: a free program based on the same program model as HEY Sister for boys ages 8-12.
